Even though we all think we know how long a pregnancy lasts, it turns out there's a pretty wide range for how long a bun can stay in the oven!

It is really good that you tell people not to be anxious about the precise due date. I heard that in fact only 7% of the babies are born in the date they were forecasted.

I was actually like 3 - 4 weeks overdue. I have a problem with procrastination and time management and it seems that was the case from the start....

I remember when my Mom told me my brother's due date would be on my 9th birthday. She then informed me that babies are never born on their due date. To my joy, he was!

That is a crazy range for something we give a definitive number (9 months) regularly.

My two brothers were both a month "overdue." My mom's doctor said there was no such thing as a 9 month baby - the baby comes when it is ready.

My third child was due Oct 28. Bought the cutest little costume for their first Halloween. Born Nov 18. Fortunately, it was onesy style so she had really cute pajamas.

Also, after fertilization, which can be up to 5 days after insemination, it can take up to 10 days for the embryo to attach to the uterus wall!

Considering I was born "a month late" and was a big baby (9 lbs 15.5 oz), I believe this 100%.

My due dates were all wrong because they calculated from date of my last period but I was tracking and knew my cycle was very long before ovulation, throwing off the due date. Baby measured correctly based on my ovulation date both times, which made them have to change the due date.

I never understood why we don’t give people a due period. For example a baby due “today” would be due from the 1st of august to the 5th September. Sure we can label today (15th August) as the legal date due for notes etc. But for parents to be, it makes sense to give them a larger time span, especially first time parents who often go 2-3 weeks overdue with healthy babies. Explaining that they will not be having any intervention before 5th September unless there is a medical reason to do so, would probably help a LOT of anxiety people experience in their first pregnancy!

My mum is a Midwife, which is a government medically trained role here in New Zealand, they are the ones that will handle all aspects of prenatal, birth and postnatal care. Her and most of her colleagues agree that it's easier to explain that it will be typically just under 10 months, rather than saying 9 months, since most births will end up happening closer to the 10 month period than 9 months

My doctors tried to tell me August 16th for my daughter's birth... I said NO, she will be born by July 16th. I was off by 5 days.

I was born 2-3 weeks after the estimated due date! My mom would have to get induced by August 3rd if I wasn't born yet by that time, but thankfully I was born the day before that lmao

Had an argument about this with a coworker, he said a pregnancy lasts 9 months and thats that, as if building a baby is done on a precise schedule.

If you keep track of your ovulation times (and if you are aware of certain symptoms and slight shifts in body temperature you can actually do that) and the date you had “relations” you can be accurate to within a couple days.
