I'm teaching my kid that English is a very sneaky language that is always trying to trick you. I don't want him to think he's defective in some way when he uses perfectly reasonable common sense to figure out how to spell a word, and then 90% of what he figures out is wrong. I try to put a positive spin on it, like he and English are constantly hiding behind places to see who's going to jump out on whom first. If he learns the tricky word, that's one more trick English can't play on him today.

I used to be an au pair in America... Hard to make a 5 year old understand that, yes, "tower" and "o" (as in Honey Os) are both spelled with an O. And yes, I know it's not the same sounds, blame your language!

My parents have a very long driveway so my dog would get overly excited when people discussed getting the mail. So we started spelling it. He was a German shepherd so he figured out how to spell mail in under a month.
