Renaissance are an English progressive rock band, best known for their 1978 UK top 10 hit "Northern Lights" and progressive rock classics like "Carpet of the Sun", "Mother Russia", and "Ashes Are Burning". They developed a unique sound, combining a female lead vocal with a fusion of classical, folk, rock, and jazz influences. Characteristic elements of the Renaissance sound are Annie Haslam's wide vocal range, prominent piano accompaniment, orchestral arrangements, vocal harmonies, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, synthesiser, and versatile drum work. The band created a significant following in the northeast United States in the 1970s, and that region remains their strongest fan base.

The original line-up included two former members of The Yardbirds, Keith Relf and Jim McCarty, along with John Hawken, Louis Cennamo and Relf's sister Jane Relf. They intended to put "something together with more of a classical influence". Renaissance was born, and the band released a studio album in 1969, and another in 1971. Subsequently, John Tout replaced Hawken on keyboards, followed by a period of high turnover of musicians until the "classic line-up" of Haslam, John Tout, Michael Dunford, Jon Camp, and Terry Sullivan was established, although none of them were in the original band. They were assisted with lyrics on many songs from Cornish poet Betty Thatcher-Newsinger. From 1972 to 1979 Renaissance released seven successful studio albums, toured extensively, and sold out three nights in a row at Carnegie Hall with Tony Cox conducting the New York Philharmonic.

This is Kings and Queens from their debut album. Broadcast in January 1970 but this is the master tape with no visual efects. Whoever has found this, THANK YOU. This is a window to another age.

in case anyone wonders what "progressive rock" is. This is a prime example...not just a song, a journey

I miss the great prog-rockers like Renaissance, Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP, Moody Blues, etc. I always contend that the best music came out of the sixties and seventies. As a singer-songwriter myself, growing up listening to everyone recording at that time has influenced me to write across genres, which is acceptable today. There is just so much out there. Things were a bit less complicated back in the days of Renaissance. But I have no complaints as I was surrounded by musical perfection for two decades.

You just don't put commercials in the middle of music dude, No. At the beginning and/or end, sure, but that is awful.

In my opinion, Keith Relf's voice was far better suited to this style of music than to singing blues. Also, did he ever play guitar in the Yardbirds? His loss, just as he was building his own style, was one of the biggest tragedies to hit postwar music. Anybody else notice that this song almost seems like the prototype for the 70s "flamenco-prog" band Carmen? Coincidentally, they were a brother-sister band too.

I was fifteen in 1969 when both Renaissance and Steeleye Span formed. I loved them both and now, at the age of 69, I still find myself humming their music when I least expect it. We, as a people, tend to idolize and exalt Baroque and Classical composers such as Mozart and Beethoven. These groups that fused Classical, Baroque and English Folk music with 'rock' should be held in the same high regard.

Jane Relf, Pattie Santos and Annie Haslam humbly show that the pure, unaffected and, frankly, beautiful female voice has a place in rock. Grace Slick, Janis Joplin and other screachers got all the attention, but these gifted pioneers stand the test of time.

I was fortunate enough to see them in Chicago back in the early 70’s. Small, intimate venue allowed the listener the opportunity to really hear the shear talent of every band member.

I didn't know that Keith Rief played guitar. Then again if you have Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page in your band, you will never get to play guitar.

This is great! I had no idea that Keith Relf was such a good guitarist. Parts of his soloing sounded like he was taking a page out of the Jeff Beck songbook, which is never a bad idea. And of course, Jim McCarty really shines on drums as do the others on their instruments.

Never knew Keith Relf was such an accomplished guitarist. I guess when you were formerly in a band with Clapton, Beck and Page, you kind of get pushed back.
