Effective Tuesday, January 9th, 2024, the Child Mind Instituteā€™s Midtown Manhattan office will move into new Global Headquarters at 215 East 50th Street (at the corner of 50th St. and 3rd Ave). Our new offices will double our footprint, allowing us to scale impact across all three of our Mission Areas: Care, Education, and Science.ā£

Ā· The new address remains in Midtown, NYC, an easy walk from public transportation to the rest of the city and the surrounding metro area.ā£
Ā· Our clinical specialties will occupy distinct ā€œneighborhoodsā€ within the office, each with their own waiting areas. ā£
Ā· We will have a dedicated entry, with private elevators and internal stairs between the upper floors. ā£
Ā· Major artists are donating work to decorate the space, creating opportunities for contemplation, inspiration, and positive energy. Our offices will feel modern and inviting for children and their families alike, not like a hospital or traditional clinical setting. ā£
Ā· By the Spring, we plan to open a private outside space off the first floor. A place where, on nicer days, caregivers can get a breath of fresh air while their kids are seen inside. ā£
Ā· Weā€™ve signed a 31-year lease, so you can depend on us being there when weā€™re needed, for decades to come. ā£
ā£
Weā€™re thrilled to begin this next phase of the Child Mind Instituteā€™s history. One where we look forward, and work even harder, toward a world where every child receives the care they need to thrive.

We, at Child Mind Institute, condemn the barbaric attacks on Israeli civilians by the terrorist organization Hamas. Our hearts go out to the families caught in this terrifying situation -- especially those whose loved ones, including children, have been killed, injured, or kidnapped.ā£
ā£
And we know that the trauma goes well beyond those whoā€™ve suffered an immediate loss. There are families and children far from the bloodshed who must now struggle with fear and horror as they learn about another war, on another front. Once again, our sense of security has been diminished. As the violence continues and dominates news reports, more children will be exposed to it. Children will be understandably disturbed and need both explanation and reassurance.ā£
ā£
At the Child Mind Institute, we offer guidance to parents, educators and caregivers struggling to support children, whether they are at risk of violence themselves or trying to absorb upsetting news of events at a distance.ā£
ā£
ā€¢ š“ššš¤šž š€šœšš¢šØš§:Ā If your family knows people who are exposed to acts of terrorism and threat during war, you can assure your children that you will reach out and provide support and advocacy. Identifying actions to take can make kids feel less helpless and counteract worries that they were too passive in a state of emergency.Ā ā£
Ā ā£
ā€¢ ššž šŒš¢š§ššŸš®š„: Your children are highly attuned to your moods and are sensitive to messages you may unintentionally send about their safety.Ā They have less knowledge than you for putting events in context. Remember some of the things that you believed as a child and imagine how your children may be reacting to your words and your moods. ā£
Ā ā£
ā€¢ š„š±šžš«šœš¢š¬šž š‚šØš§šš«šØš„: News coverage can provide unfiltered access to the horror caused by terrorism and war. Limit your childrenā€™s exposure to disturbing imagery ā€” witnessing these scenes can provoke anxious responses and panic.Ā Be intentional about what you share with your children based on their age and their capacity to understand these events. ā£
Ā ā£
ā€¢ šŒššš¢š§šššš¢š§ š‘šØš®šš¢š§šžš¬: It can be very helpful to maintain standard and predictable daily schedules. Answer the questions your children ask and allow them to go back to the things they enjoy. Involvement in play and other engaging activities serves as a therapeutic distraction from the horrors they are being exposed to.ā£
ā£
We can't always protect our children from bad things happening, but how we handle traumatic events and the exposure to disturbing information can help them handle their fear and process these events in a healthier way.Ā ā£
ā£
Our detailed guides to helping children of different ages handle traumatic events is available here, in 16 languages, including English and Hebrew:Ā childmind.org/guide/multilingual-trauma-resources/ā€¦
ā£
We hope these resources will offer some guidance and comfort in this tragic situation.

Every year, for May Mental Health Awareness Month, the Child Mind Institute reaches out to our community to raise awareness about kidsā€™ challenges with mental health or learning disorders.

This year weā€™re proud to announce our You Got This campaign. All month long, weā€™ll be featuring personal videos and interviews from celebrities, influencers, athletes, and kids sharing stories about mental health challenges of their past and present, reinforcing the empowering message that while things may be hard now, #YouGotThis.

The campaign kicks off with an interview between Cooper, one of the Child Mind Instituteā€™s patients, and Bridgerton's Phoebe Dynevor. The two discuss their struggles with anxiety. Phoebe describes how her first real experiences with anxiety started when she was studying for exams in school, and how sheā€™s been able to turn it into an advantage for her acting career. Cooper shares how she uses singing as an outlet to combat her anxiety.

Throughout May weā€™ll share interviews like Cooper and Phoebeā€™s, video messages from celebrities, and tip sheets with expert advice to help families have important conversations about mental health.
