Have you ever wondered why your energy levels or digestion feel off when the seasons change?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the key to feeling balanced during these transitions lies in the food we eat. TCM teaches us to align our diets with the external environment to support the body’s natural rhythms and maintain harmony.

As the weather shifts, so does your body’s energy (Qi). To keep everything in sync, consuming foods that mirror the qualities of the season is crucial. For example, during late summer, when the Earth element is dominant, the climate tends to be warm and damp. To balance this, TCM suggests eating foods that are grounding, mildly warm, and easy to digest, such as root vegetables, grains, and fresh or lightly cooked fruits.

Food to include into your diet:

🍁 Grains: Millet, bulgur wheat, and corn. These grains are easy to digest and help to support the digestive fire.

🍠 Root Vegetables: Carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, pumpkin and beetroot. These vegetables are grounding and nourishing, providing much needed moisture.

🍎 Fruits: Pears, apples, prunes, peaches and dates. Fruits that are being harvested during late summer period help support the body's energy and digestion.

By matching your food to the energy of the environment, you help your body adapt smoothly to seasonal transitions, promoting better digestion, more energy, and overall well-being.

What is your favourite food this time of the year?

Did you know that the Earth element phase isn’t just about late summer?

It actually occurs five times a year during what’s known as the "doyo" or "transitional phase" between each of the four seasons.

These 18-day periods are key times for focusing on the Earth element, which is deeply connected to our digestion through the Spleen and Stomach. The Earth element supports the transformation and transportation of nutrients, and it’s essential for maintaining balance and stability in both body and mind.

During these transitions, our bodies adjust to the changing energies of the seasons, and it’s the Earth element that helps us stay grounded and stable. By nurturing the Earth element during these phases, we can enhance digestion, improve mental clarity, and promote emotional balance.

Key Practices to Support the Earth Element:
🌻 Diet: Focus on warm, easily digestible foods like grains, root vegetables, and squashes. Avoid cold and raw foods that can weaken digestive fire.
🌻 Gentle Movement: Engage in Qigong, Tai Chi, or other practices that focus on strengthening digestion, and nourishment of the Earth element.

In case you missed it, I've just released a brand new Qigong For Weight Loss & Better Digestion course to help you support your body’s ability to adapt to seasonal changes and promote a sense of vitality and well-being.

This Sunday, we had an incredibly powerful group class that I think many of you would find beneficial, especially if you're navigating emotional stress.

One of our cherished members shared their experience, saying, "After an emotional week, I wasn't feeling well—tired and unsettled. But during our class, as we moved through the breathing exercises all the way to the heart, I felt all the tension release. The tears of letting go flowed, and it was beautiful and healing."

If you're feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders or just need a space to breathe and let go, I highly encourage you to watch the class on replay. It was a nourishing Yin session with the special focus on the heart energy center.

Remember, you're not alone on this journey. Our community is here, a space of support and healing. Let's continue to lift each other up and share the healing power of Qigong.

In the Five Element Theory, the late summer is linked to the Earth element, which governs stomach and spleen functions, emphasising nourishment, stability, and balance.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the stomach and spleen play significant roles in weight management and loss.

🌻 Digestive Efficiency
Stomach: The stomach's primary function in TCM is to break down food, initiating the digestive process. An efficient stomach helps ensure that food is properly digested, reducing the likelihood of it being stored as fat.
Spleen: Vital for transforming food into Qi and blood, the spleen helps distribute these nutrients throughout the body. A strong spleen ensures efficient metabolism of nutrients, which can aid in weight management.

🌻 Energy Production and Metabolism
A well-functioning spleen produces sufficient Qi, which is crucial for maintaining a high metabolic rate. A higher metabolism can aid in burning more calories and, consequently, in weight loss.

🌻 Fluid Metabolism
The spleen also plays a role in managing the body's water balance by controlling the movement and processing of fluids. Proper functioning of the spleen can prevent dampness and phlegm, which in TCM are believed to contribute to weight gain.

🌻 Emotional Balance
Emotional disturbances can often lead to overeating or unhealthy eating habits. The spleen's association with emotions such as worry and overthinking means that keeping the spleen healthy can help maintain emotional balance, potentially reducing excess worry and unproductive thinking.

In today's video, I'm sharing simple Qigong exercises that are suitable for anyone looking to support their weight loss journey naturally.

"When eyes obtain blood, we can see, when feet obtain blood, we can walk, when hands obtain blood, we can hold, when fingers obtain blood, we can grasp." - Yellow Emperor (2697 to 2597 BC).

This emphasises that for every part of our body to function optimally, it must receive a sufficient supply of blood, which carries not only nutrients but also vital energy throughout the body.

👁 Vision and Liver Health: The liver is said to "open into the eyes." If the liver is healthy and the blood is abundant, our vision is sharp and clear.

🦶 Mobility and Kidney Health: Our ability to walk reflects the health of the kidneys, which in TCM are believed to govern the bones and marrow. Strengthening kidney health through Qigong can enhance stability and mobility.

🤲 Dexterity and Heart Health: The hands are extensions of the heart. A well-nourished heart ensures that the hands and fingers are adept and capable of performing tasks that require fine motor skills.

Qigong incorporates movements that stimulate the flow of Qi and blood to all parts of the body, harmonising our internal systems and enhancing our overall well-being.
