Produced by David Foster through Geffen Records, The original Broadway cast recording of "Dreamgirls" would become the best-selling cast album since âHairâ in 1968. To try and broaden its appeal beyond the theatre crowd, it was conceived as a pop record. In a time where most casts recorded a show's album in a day, "Dreamgirls" was recorded over a period of 8 weeks. Tapes were then sent to LA to be mixed over several weeks. The finished album, released in April 1982, clocked in at just about 47 minutes of material with many songs left off or truncated came to about. While a breakout single never materialized in earnest (Jennifer Holliday did win a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance singing "And I Am Telling You"), the album did peak at #11 on Billboard and #4 on the R&B charts. A 25th anniversary release of the album would retain many songs omitted from the original release.

The late great Gary Gunas talks about how Michael Bennett 'fixed' the big act one closer for "Dreamgirls". These are the kind of details and stories that I love. Also, if you haven't watched "Old Show Queens", I don't know what to tell you.

The Andrews Sisters and The Supremes performing each otherâs hits for each other in 1966 is gloriously kitschy and hilarious. This whole performance on Sammy Davis Jrâs show is utterly charming. Also, Florence Ballard is plunk on the middle before the mic and can be heard singing lead. She sounded great!

Working on the âDreamgirlsâ episode and this scene from âI, Tonyaâ sums up my feelings on its production history.
Stay tuned⌠â¤ď¸

This quote from Mary Wilsonâs book destroyed me: âWith one look at Flo, I knew that dreams donât die, people just stop dreaming.â

Current read. Just finished the Garth Drabinski/Ragtime chapter. I work and live Toronto. Itâs weirdly triggering to read some of this. Some of it I have heard from colleagues who were âon the sceneâback in the day. He was such a crook and con, and all the clues were there early on. All those years later, I still canât believe people trusted him to get involved with the whole Paradise Square debacle. What a shit show.
