“One more book. One more song.”

Or maybe it’s “Don’t leave, I need to tell you something. My favorite color is blue!” LOL

“I need to kiss Daddy. One more hug Mommy!”

“Where’s my elephant? I NEED him.”

And the best… “I need to pee!”

You know the drill. Bedtime stalling is so exhausting because we’re all tired & parents just want an easy bedtime & for our kids to fall asleep happily.

Instead, our LOs keep stalling & having more requests & we get impatient & frustrated. It’s not a fun way to end the day.

⭐ ⭐ The best approach for ending endless bedtime requests & stalling is to: ✍ Be prepared.

Have your child’s water bottle, stuffed animal & books ready in their bedroom to help meet all their (genuine) needs & requests at bedtime. Make sure other caregivers have said goodnight, given them a kiss & told them they would see them in the morning.

You can only be so prepared, though, and then it’s time to set your limits & stick to them.

📕 There are no more books tonight, we’ll read more tomorrow.

🎶 We sang our 2 songs & we’ll sing more tomorrow. Why don’t you think of what songs you want to sing tomorrow?

😴 Stories are all done for tonight. As you fall asleep, think of a good story we can tell tomorrow.

👨‍🦰 Daddy said good night & cuddled you & you’ll see him in the morning.

🧸 You have your stuffed teddy & fox, you can sleep with elephant tomorrow.

❤️ Build in lots of hugs & kisses during your bedtime routine & reassure them that you can’t wait to hug them more in the morning but NOW it’s time to sleep.

Gentle, loving yet firm limits. It’s not cruel, it’s not insensitive. Research shows that children THRIVE with boundaries & they depend on their parents to give them limits. Otherwise, the world is too overwhelming.

“I can’t wait to see you in the morning. Now it’s time to sleep so you have energy to run around, ride your scooter, go fast on the slide, high up in the swings & play with your friends tomorrow. I love you, good night.”

Anticipate their needs in advance & stick to your limits. And watch the bedtime stalling disappear!

Struggling to get your toddler to ACTUALLY take a nap everyday?

Most 1-2 year olds still need a daily nap (and lots of 3-4 year olds do too).

The best way to get your LO nice & tired & ready to nap is to:

☀️Wake them up at the same time every morning.

📱Limit screen time. (The more screen time our LOs clock up, the harder it is to settle & fall asleep). Skip screen time in the morning & see how much it helps your toddler.

🌳 Play outside. Less screen time & more outside play leads to tired little kiddies. Aim for one hour running around outside everyday before nap time. (More is better!)

😊 Communicate your expectations. Toddlers hate nap time surprises. So let your LO know earlier in the day that a nap will be occurring. It’s a normal event everyday just like lunch and bath time.

😴 Have a set nap time everyday. Waking up & napping at the same times everyday helps set your toddler’s body clock. This makes sleep come so much easier for them. Aim for a 5-6 hour wake window in the morning.

Does my baby need to drop a nap?

YES, if:
The last nap of the day is impossible!
Out of the blue, all naps are difficult.
LO needs longer & longer awake times.
Bedtime keeps getting pushed later OR early wakings start.

Sometimes, sleep training for naps can solve the above issues. But if your LO had been napping great & suddenly naps are causing LOTS of problems, chances are they may be ready to drop a nap.

✅ You currently breastfeed to sleep
✅ You currently co-sleep
✅ You work full-time
✅ Your baby goes to daycare
✅ It didn't work before
✅ Your baby or toddler is strong-willed or sensitive

My baby stands (or sits up) in the crib & won’t sleep!

Here’s what to do.

👉🏻 If they’re NOT crying: Give them space.

This gives your LO the opportunity to practice getting back down & not become dependent on your help.

If they’re not crying, give them 15-20 mins to work it out on their own.

Giving your child the chance to maneuver around the crib & reposition themself helps them grow comfortable in their sleep space & not depend on you. It’s the quickest way to get them sleeping well.

👉🏻 If they ARE crying: Give support.

Go to your LO, but rather than picking them up right away, sit on the floor next to their crib & encourage them to lie down. Pat the mattress.

Another few mins of fussing, with a parent nearby, can get your LO to get down on their own.

You can try to gently lay your baby down. Keep your hands on them for a few mins to prevent them from popping right back up.

Make sure to give your baby lots of floor time during the day to practice getting up & down on their own.
