Alston and Briggs were paired up as pen pals during elementary school in 1980. The 10-year-olds were from California and Pennsylvania respectively.

"I'm sure they were probably hoping that we would stay connected or you know, or continue on with it," said Alston.

They sure did.

"We wrote by-hand letters for a long time," said Briggs. "I think we thought about each other, you know, whether we were in contact or not."

They discovered what each other had and did not have in common.

"Our differences, we would write about and that's what I would learn about and she would learn about me," said Alson. "It was a new experience with a new person."

The women intended to meet in person for the first time to celebrate their 50th birthday. Unfortunately, the lockdowns in 2020 postponed that opportunity.

Finally, the stars aligned for Alston to visit Pennsylvania. The friends met in person for the first time at Courtyard by Marriott in Wayne. Then, they enjoyed dinner at an Italian restaurant.

"We'll just continue to stay in contact and stay in each other's lives," said Alston.

Back in 2017, then 7-year-old Kaleb Ramos wanted to do something special for kids going through a rough time.

He had spent three years growing out his hair so that he could eventually cut it and donate it to help young cancer patients.

"I had a teacher who donated her hair, so I wanted to donate mine," he said back then.

Nearly six years later, Kaleb is spreading awareness and love once again. He is cutting his long hair and donating about 20 inches of it to the same cause. And this time, Kaleb is not alone. His younger brother Julius is joining him in this act of kindness.

The New Jersey siblings hope their actions inspire others to consider donating their hair to children fighting cancer.

Localish is delighted to share that 13 incredible youth leaders have been named Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award Honorees, celebrating young individuals who have gone above and beyond for their communities in sports-related causes. Below are the achievements of Viva Kreis, Sandhya Mahesh, and Rishan Patel, three of this year’s honorees (left to right):

- Viva Kreis is a three-sport high school varsity athlete and a published writer, best known for her children’s book called “She Did That!?” about inspiring female athletes such as Billie Jean King. Viva created the ‘Sock It to Homelessness’ initiative, which donated more than 5,000 pair of socks for homeless veterans in Pennsylvania. Having experienced considerable inequalities in sports, Viva strongly believes in the power of representation and hopes that the Award will enable her to further her education to become a journalist and broadcaster for women’s sports.
- Sandhya Mahesh is a coach at SkateTherapy, a program encouraging children with disabilities to skate as a form of physical therapy. Her goals are to create better representation and a more inclusive environment for people with disabilities, and to provide skate opportunities for the underserved populous. Sandhya hopes the Award will help unlock the potential of disabled athletes and inspire the world to think differently about the power of disabled people.
- Rishan Patel is one of three National Honorees and is the founder and CEO of the sports equity nonprofit, Alley-Oop Kids and its legacy project Lending Lockers, which installs free-of-charge equipment lockers at under-resourced schools. Lending Lockers have been installed at over 100 locations worldwide, from Menlo to Mumbai, serving over 70,000 underserved youths. Rishan hopes that the Award will become a catalyst for youth activists to continue fighting for sports equity and lead change in their respective communities.

The Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award celebrates the sports icon's commitment to leadership and service, honoring high school and college-aged students who use sports to improve their communities. Every recipient gets a college scholarship or can direct a grant to their chosen charity. Tune in to the ESPYS on ABC, July 12.

GUARDIAN ANGELS: Two healthcare workers at AtlantiCare Heart and Vascular Institute had been out to dinner on Good Friday in Brigantine, New Jersey when a man at the table next to them had a medical emergency.

83-year-old Frank DeAngelis was that patron. While waiting for his desert, his heart stopped. The two women immediately sprung into action and began CPR, which immediately saved Frank's life.

He ended up recovering in the same hospital where they work and called them his "guardian angels" when he was released, less than a week later.

Both he and the workers are now stressing the need for more people to become CPR certified.

THE AMERICAN DREAM: Thi Tram Nguyen describes herself as the 'American Dream.’ She said her experience as a Vietnamese refugee gave her the courage to become the founder of Chez Francois Poutinerie and the nonprofit Friends Of Francois.

"I think I'm a survivor so nothing scares me," said Nguyen. "It's like me going on the boat; you take a risk."

Friends Of Francois, named after Nguyen’s son who has autism, is a nonprofit organization committed to providing free job and social skill training to individuals with disabilities. Chez Francois Poutinerie hosts the organization’s training program where its participants learn how to prepare food, clean surfaces, and serve customers with the hope of future job placement.

"What's good about adults with disabilities is they love repetition," said Nguyen. "They love that when they come, they know what to do."

Nguyen fled Vietnam in 1979 on a boat bound for a refugee camp in Thailand. She said her mother placed her on a fishing vessel with other family members because of threats to her parents’ business from communist leaders. She eventually relocated to Montreal, Canada, where she spent the remainder of her childhood.

"Going to school was a challenge but my refugee friends, we had a goal," said Nguyen. "We needed to go to school and get the degree."

After college, Nguyen said she spent many years working as a pharmaceutical sales representative before marrying her husband and starting a family. Around a decade ago, they relocated to the Chicago area and settled in Naperville. Nguyen describes her son Francois’s autism as low-functioning and said she was concerned about his future prospects as he aged out of the school system.

"We cannot just sit and complain because nothing's going to happen," said Nguyen. "I wanted to give a place where people are going to see them; that they are a part of the community."

Nguyen and her husband took their life savings and with the help of many others started Chez Francois Poutinerie to provide a place for individuals with disabilities like her son to be employed. She said she also wanted to introduce Naperville to her favorite Canadian street food, poutine. The restaurant serves many tasty variations of the dish, which consists of fresh-cut french fries and cheese curds topped with gravy.

"We work and we give our time for the love of the kids because nobody's making money," said Nguyen. "We do it because we believe in the mission."

Zoe Koulos is the general manager of Chez Francois Poutinerie and the President and Program Director for Friends of Francois. She said the nonprofit is more than just a job training program.

"Our goal is to get these individuals jobs in the community," said Koulos. "We want to change the culture in Naperville and eventually all over so that people can see that individuals with disabilities are capable."

The restaurant was a buzz of activity on the day of taping; employees Joseph Andresano and Zhacary Warren prepared food in the kitchen while Anthony Longo cut potatoes and served trays in the dining room. Nguyen said she had seen a sea change in her workers as they’ve developed their skills and she’s proud that her customers are able to see them in action.

"They are the best employees," said Nguyen. "They need more love and they need more coaching but when they master a job, they're going to do it because they love what they do."

A SURVIVOR'S LEGACY: Tova Friedman and her grandson Aron Goodman have built up a massive online following by sharing Tova’s story of survival from the Holocaust and teaching lessons about Jewish history.

"When we were liberated, I was six and a half," Tova explains. "I just sort of feel, 'Wow, I survived. That's great. What can I do?’ I felt a complete obligation to talk and I feel I represent the children who can't talk for themselves."

"The fact that my grandmother is able to live through such horrific events and overcome it and then live a prosperous life," Aron reflects. "It's amazing how someone can overcome such darkness and bring new life into the world."

Together they are changing perceptions and using social media to help new generations learn about Jewish history.

"The Jewish community alone cannot fight anti-Semitism," Aron says about why he runs the account.

"We all have to have enough faith in ourselves that 'we can do,’ and we should at least try," Tova concludes.

RACING BUDDIES: At age 7, Sean Marriott experienced blurred vision while attending summer camp with his brothers. A stay at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia revealed he had a brain tumor, which led to a loss of vision.

Now, after receiving treatment, the 5th-grade student at St. Lucy School for Children with Visual Impairments is getting a chance to shine.

That's thanks to a recent move by St. Lucy School to its new home on the campus of St. Jerome Parish, placing it directly next door to St. Jerome School. In addition to better handicap accessibility, St. Lucy is now able to integrate some of its students into the classroom and extracurricular activities at St. Jerome.

"I just feel, like, so thankful because there's, like, so many kids in St. Jerome that are so eager and happy to help," said Marriott. "Whether it's, like, track or getting somewhere at recess, they, like, are so happy to help any of us at St. Lucy's."

Students like Chris Kelly and Luke Fanelli have volunteered to partner up with Marriott, particularly on the race track.

"We go to track practice and we use a ring so that we can keep Sean in his lane and running great," said Fanelli. "I thought it was amazing because he's such a nice kid and I loved to help him do something that he was really passionate about."

That kind of partnership is something that both schools' faculties want to foster and grow over the years to come.

"There were so many benefits of moving here, but I can see in hindsight now that God really wanted us here," said Sister Lisa Lettiere, principal of St. Lucy School. "I know there are more children out there who probably could benefit from our services and I just, I hope that we can be available to anyone who needs us."

PIANO PRODIGY: In one neighborhood, folks gather to watch an 11-year-old boy play his piano. A 30-second video of that performance has collected more than four million views and counting. It's a video that has changed the life of Traevon Narcisse.

"He now has had bookings for different festivals, church settings," Traevon's mother, Destiny Narcisse said. "We were invited to New York for the first time to the Tamron Hall show."

Traevon's passion for music started in church when he was a toddler.

"When I was 3 years old I started playing the drums," Traevon said. "At 10, I started easing to the keyboard and at 11 I started learning more and now I'm in it."
