Millions of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants have arrived in Europe over the past years. Many have died or gone missing trying to reach the continent, more than 3,000 people in 2023 alone. These numbers pose a challenge for political leaders in countries receiving migrants as they struggle to find ways to deal with people driven from their homes by conflict, poverty and climate change.

DW Documentary has recently broadcast a number of documentary films on the topic of migration made by filmmakers from the African continent and would like to use the opportunity to discuss the questions: What challenges or problems does large-scale migration cause? What are the reasons for concerns in Europe, and are the continent’s migration policies adequate? What are the positive effects of migration? Can migration provide unique opportunities, not only for those making their way to Europe, but also for Europe itself?

The online panel discussion 'Migration to Europe: Crisis, Challenge, Chance?' will cover these topics. Join us for the discussion on December 12, 2023, at 18:00 (CET) / 17:00 (UTC): youtube.com/live/iy9xD7oWFpc

Update:
In our documentary "Guardians of the Truth”, we address the investigation by Mexican journalist Anabel Hernandez into the disappearance of 43 students from Ayotzinapa in the Mexican state of Guerrero.

On Thursday, August 18, a truth commission set up to investigate the Ayotzinapa case in Mexico concluded that the enforced disappearance of the 43 Mexican students in 2014 was a "state crime" in which "members of the criminal group Guerreros Unidos and agents of various Mexican State institutions" were involved. It further determined that there is no evidence that the victims are still alive.

The country's former Attorney General, Jesus Murillo Karam, responsible for the investigations into the 43 students' disappearance, was arrested a day later "for forced disappearance and torture in the Ayotzinapa case".
