Our latest PERFI (Personal Finance) video is about Student Loans, and how to minimize their burden. Is this something you're dealing with now?

Socratica Friends, if you're in the tornadoes in Chicago, Illinois right now we hope you are safe and sound. By a strange coincidence ‪@SocraticaKids‬ channel just released an explainer about tornadoes, so you can share this with your kids. It's not scary or sensationalized, just calm explanation of the facts.

Socratica Friends, you know Dianna Cowern ‪@physicsgirl‬ has Long Covid. She cannot work or take care of herself. She is cared for by her husband Kyle, and they are searching for treatment while trying to keep Dianna stable. Dianna has spent most of the last two years in bed, trying not to "crash" her vitals and have to go to the Emergency Room.
There's great variability in how Long Covid affects people: unrelenting fatigue that doesn't go away with a good night's sleep, insomnia for that matter, migraines, organ damage, brain damage, new onset autoimmune diseases, loss of cognition, new psychiatric disorders, etc.
Our co-founder Michael Harrison also has Long Covid, since December of last year, and his presents as POTS, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (his heart speeds up as if he's running at top speed if he stands up or walks across the room, so very minor activity like brushing teeth wears him out). But while Michael is able to work for about an hour a day at his desk, Dianna cannot leave her bed.
This Saturday (tomorrow), 6 July 2024, there will be a livestream fundraiser on Dianna's youtube channel. It will show a day in Dianna's life, what it's like for someone with her condition. It will be co-hosted by Ian Hecox and Simone Giertz, and will include expert interviews and in-depth discussions.
Dianna will not be talking during the live-stream, she will be in bed, mostly awake, but resting all day - as she does everyday. Viewers can learn from the interviews and discussions, hear Kyle, Simone and Ian answer your questions, and of course see Dianna.

All funds will be going to the Open Medicine Foundation (OMF), a non-profit research organization dedicated to finding effective treatments for ME/CFS.

Pre-recorded interviews from experts —

Linda Tannenbaum, founder and CEO of the Open Medicine Foundation.
Interviewed by Derek Muller from Veritasium.

Dr. David Kaufman, an ME/CFS specialist.
Interviewed by Vanessa Hill from BrainCraft.

Dr. Raven Baxter, a science communicator.
Interviewed by Kyle Kitzmiller.

Dr. David Putrino, director of rehabilitation innovation for MT. Selenite Health Systems. Interviewed by Kyle Kitzmiller.

The live stream will be viewable on the PhysicsGirl channel on Youtube from 6:45A.M. (PT. Pacific Time) to 6:00P.M. (PT).

Socratica Friends, what's the rule of thumb you use for how far away a storm is? In this video, we're teaching budding meteorologists that it is about 1km away for every 3 seconds delay between lightning and thunder. But that's not what we were taught as kids!

For our #GenX Socratica Friends, this requires no explanation.
For everyone else, we genuinely grew up thinking we were going to have to deal with getting stuck in quicksand at some point in our lives.

Socratica Friends, did you grow up hearing about a flood myth where you grew up? 🌊 Like Noah and the Ark, or Yu the Great, or the Hathor and the Eye of Ra? FLOODS is the Natural Wonder of the week on ‪@SocraticaKids‬. 💦
