Taking care of a dog's health is especially important during the summer season. Dogs have fur all over their bodies and sweat glands only on their tongues and paw pads, making it challenging for them to regulate body temperature. Here are the three key aspects of summer health care for dogs:
1) Do not cut your dog's fur too short, less than 3cm!
Some people may want to trim their dogs' fur shorter to help them cope with the heat, but dogs' fur serves as insulation and also provides protection against UV rays. If the fur is cut too short, sunlight and UV rays can directly reach the dog's skin, causing them to feel even hotter and making them more susceptible to skin diseases.
A dog's skin is more delicate than that of humans, so a certain length of fur is necessary to provide a protective barrier. Trimming the fur to less than 3 cm removes the undercoat, leaving the skin vulnerable. It's best to take walks in the evening rather than during the day, and choose surfaces like soil instead of asphalt to prevent burns on the paw pads. Applying a moisturizer to the paw pads after walks can help prevent skin conditions and cracking.
2) Increase water intake!
Since it's not possible to give a large amount of water to dogs all at once, you can supplement their water intake with tasty and textured vegetables and fruits like cucumber or watermelon. However, if your dog has diabetes, it's recommended to avoid feeding them watermelon.
To check if your dog is getting enough water, you can lift the skin on the back of their neck. If the skin quickly returns to its place when released, it indicates adequate hydration, but if it returns slowly, it may indicate dehydration. Additionally, check if their gums are moist and smooth and if their nose is moist and shiny.
3) Prevent heartworm and tick infestations!
Summer is the season for bugs. There are many insects in the grass and among flowers. Make sure your dog is up-to-date on preventive injections, and use products like topical treatments and repellents, as well as insecticidal collars. These measures will provide added protection.
Take care of your dogs during the hot summer days and keep them safe from the scorching sun. Wishing you a safe and happy summer!
May is a great season for walking, but there is a risk of ticks on dogs. So, let's take a look at how to prevent and deal with tick bites on dogs in May.
๐Prevention
Be careful not to take your dog to places where ticks are present. Ticks mainly inhabit grassy areas, forests, and bushes. Try not to take your dog to these places if possible.
Use tick repellent for dogs. Dog tick repellents can be purchased at animal pharmacies. Before applying tick repellent, be sure to check the instructions and apply it accordingly.
If you find a tick on your dog, remove it immediately. When removing a tick, use tweezers or tick removers. When removing it, be careful not to injure your dog's skin.(Never pop a tick to kill it!)
๐ฅTreatment
If your dog is bitten by a tick, visit a medical facility immediately. Tick bites can transmit bacteria that cause Lyme disease and other illnesses, so it's important to seek medical treatment right away.
Symptoms of tick bites on dogs can include fever, fatigue, and chills. If you notice any of these symptoms, visit a medical facility to receive treatment.
