On July 17, 2014, exactly 10 years ago today, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was shot down in eastern Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of all 298 passengers on board. During a memorial ceremony at the National Monument MH17 in Vijfhuizen, the names of the 298 victims are read aloud. Prime Minister Dick Schoof, present on behalf of the cabinet, gives a speech. Additionally, a two-minute moment of silence is observed.

As a Dutch citizen, this tragedy had a profound impact on me. I vividly remember how the victims were brought back to the Netherlands and then transported in a long procession of hearses from Eindhoven Air Base to the Korporaal Van Oudheusdenkazerne in Hilversum, an image that I will never forget.

Singapore Airlines flight SQ321, traveling from London Heathrow to Singapore on May 20, 2024, encountered severe turbulence mid-flight. The Boeing 777-300ER was forced to divert to Bangkok, landing safely at 15:45 local time on May 21, 2024.

The airline confirmed the tragic news that there were injuries and one fatality among the 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board. Singapore Airlines expressed its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.

According to flight data reported by SkyNews, the aircraft lost over 1800 meters in altitude in just three minutes during the turbulence incident. The sixteen-year-old Boeing 777-300ER faced significant challenges over the Bay of Bengal, necessitating its diversion to Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.

Upon landing, at least ten ambulances were present on the tarmac to assist the injured passengers from flight SQ321. Medical personnel boarded the plane to provide immediate care.

The severe turbulence resulted in the death of a 73-year-old British passenger. Additionally, 53 passengers and one crew member sustained injuries, with 18 individuals requiring hospitalization. The BBC reported that seven of the injured are in critical condition, many suffering from severe head injuries. Witnesses described scenes where unbelted passengers were thrown against the ceiling due to the violent turbulence.

Singapore Airlines is cooperating with authorities to investigate the incident and provide support to the affected passengers and crew.
