MTA NYCT Subway Receives A Hybrid Locomotive By Sea And Rail.

On the July 3, 2024, NYNJ Rail, New York & Atlantic Railway, and Metropolitan Transportation Authority - MTA NYCT Subway coordinated the delivery of Wabtec WAB6HYB/R-255 HL001 from Greenville, New Jersey to Brooklyn, New York. The locomotive was loaded on the NYNJ 200 barge and powered across New York Harbor by McAllister Towing's 'Bruce McAllister'. After arrival in New York, it was unloaded by NYNJ Rail. New York & Atlantic Railway's RS-90 then transported the loco to the interchange at MTA NYCT Subway's Linden Shops, where a Division C crew brought the locomotive on to the property.

Because this kind of locomotive is not designed to work with standard consists, it is shipped on a 90-foot flat car, and will be moved to the track by crane. The Wabtec WAB6HYB/R-255 is a 675hp hybrid work locomotive designed for the demands and clearances of the New York City Subway system. The diesel engine charges the batteries, which will allow the locomotive to operate for 8 hours. This will allow a new generation of locos to pull work trains through the subway with a much lower level of emissions. MTA NYCT Subway presently rosters 90 diesel engines that operate on non-revenue work trains, and is adding this 25 unit order of R-255s as well as the 10 R-77Es under conversion to R-257s by CAD Railway Industries to increase the size and flexibility of the fleet.

Danbury Gets An AEM-7. Not long after midnight on June 7, 2024, former Amtrak AEM-7 917 arrived at The Danbury Railway Museum on Genesee & Wyoming Inc.'s Providence & Worcester Railroad Train CT-2. This brought an almost year long effort to a successful conclusion. This class of locomotive had worked on passenger trains in the Northeast on a daily basis for decades until being retired in June, 2016. Later, it was brought to Davisville, Rhode Island for storage. The final leg of the trip, on the overnight of June 6-7, 2024, brought AMTK 917 to the museum, where it will be cosmetically restored and is already on public display. At the museum, the AEM-7 joins a variety of other electric powered pieces of rail equipment, including FL-9s, M-2s, and the first mainline electric locomotive, New York Central S-1 100.

A passing meet of MTA Metro-North Railroad Train 8835 with MCNW 231 (New Haven Tribute) and Train 8844 with MNCW 201 (Conrail-40th Ann) on Saturday, June 1, 2024 shows not only two of the "heritage units" but brings together the first and last P32AC-DM from the order by New York and Connecticut. In the background in the former New York Central Croton North Station, at times also called Collaberg or Croton-on-Hudson. It served commuters until being closed in 1963.

Central Meet On Central. The release of MTA Metro-North Railroad 211 in its New York Central tribute 40th Anniversary wrap has created lots of photo opportunities to catch this lightning striped locomotive with various landmarks from the original railroad. One such scene presented itself on the afternoon of Sunday, May 12, 2024 when that day's United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey's "Hudson River Rail Excursions" passed through Poughkeepsie, New York on Amtrak Train 244 with former New York Central 'Hickory Creek' (PPCX 800733) holding the markers, creating a meet with MNCW 211 (NYC-40th Anniversary, P32AC-DM) on the platform. The car proudly displays its "20th Central Limited" tail sign and retraces its original route down the Water Level on the Hudson Line, though today like all Empire Service in the modern era will go to Moynihan Train Hall/New York Penn Station, while Metro-North trains go to the New York Central's Grand Central Terminal.

MARC at Marble Hill. The debut of leased MARC (Maryland Area Rail Commuter) cars on Amtrak crew qualification train to Grand Central Terminal occurred on March 31, 2018. Due to prior planned construction work, all Amtrak Empire Service trains were operated out of GCT during the summer of 2018, and crew training began months in advance. The cab cars were not to carry passengers but to provide a front facing egress for the engineer, which the Amtrak P32AC-DM fleet did not then have, though they have since been modified. MARC 7755 (Nippon Sharyo/Sumitomo, 1985-1987) leads the short test train, with 43376 (AmFleet I Cafe, Budd 1975-1977) and 716 (P32AC-DM, GE, 1993-1995, Phase III) under the Broadway Bridge in the Manhattan neighborhood of Marble Hill. There were a sufficient number of modified P32s within a few weeks, and the MARC cars were returned to Maryland.

Midnight Blue And A Blue Sky. Amtrak 100 (P42DC, 50th Anniversary, Midnight Blue) is in a unique paint scheme that represents the "commitment of our employees moving people around the clock and across the nation. On February 22, 2024, Amtrak Train 280 with AMTK 100 leading was nearing the end of its journey from Niagara Falls, New York to New York's Penn Station as it passed through the Harlem Valley next to the Hudson River with the George Washignton Bridge in the background. Yes, diesels do sometimes run in place of a dual-mode locomotive in Empire Service on the Hudson Line south/east of Albany-Resnsselaer. When one arrives at Penn Station, exhaust vents are turned on until the locomotive leaves for the yard.

Reflections Of Three Bridges. On morning of March 30, 2013, CSX Q010 passed through Fort Montgomery, New York with the unusual power set of Union Pacific Railroad 4766 (SD70M, EMD, 3/2002) and CSXT 5004 (AC60CW, GE, 2/2000) reflecting nicely on a very calm Hudson River as it passes over Poplopen Creek. In the background, the pedestrian bridge connecting Fort Montgomery State Park to Bear Mountain State Park is below the U.S. Route 9W Bridge. This area of the Hudson Valley is very popular for photographers, bird watchers, and hikers all year.

Harbor Line. Sitting in Wilmington near San Pedro, California on the afternoon of March 30, 2012, Pacific Harbor Line/PHL 60 (MP20C-3PR, MPI/Progress Rail, 2007) awaits the next call to service. Pacific Harbor Line was created in 1998 to take over the original Harbor Belt Line, which was formed in 1929. The railroad serves the area ports as a neutral switching railroad, and when originally formed was composed of personnel and equipment from Pacific Electric Lines (PE), Southern Pacific (SP),Santa Fe Railway (ATSF) and Union Pacific (UP). While the ATSF freight paint scheme has endured, other corporate changes reduced the number of railroads participating to two, and the creation of this new entity ensued.

A wave from the AMMO engineer adds a nice touch to the scene as MNCW 401 (BL14CG) passes through the Woodlawn Station. This locomotive is one of a pair that was purchased for tasks related to East Side Access construction. Since the completion of that project, they are now used in general work service. These differ from the Brookville BL20GH/GHM in that they have 1,400 versus 2,000 horsepower, but also do not have an HEP generator.

How to Tow An Electric MU Train In 2 Parts. When MTA Metro-North Railroad Train 1559 (New Haven, CT-Grand Central Terminal, New York, NY) broke down near the Woodlawn Station on the morning of Friday, March 29, 2024, the passengers were brought to the nearest station to be discharged. Ultimately, both the "AMMO" with GP35r 102 (ex-CR 2271, exx-PC 2271, nee-PRR 2271, EMD) and Extra 401 with BL14CG (Brookville) were dispatched to rescue the train. The crew wound up swapping locomotives and taking parts of the train in different directions. All scenes at the Woodlawn, Bronx, NY Station.
