I don't think im splitting hairs here: I think it's possible we're underestimating human consciousness. Human consciousness spills over into the animal realm. When I tried to understand, for example, the story of the dog (or the wolf), what I found was that they saw humans as having interests and understanding of this world, to which they responded by befriending humans. In other words, i think they chose humans because of the value of human consciousness. Moreover, when animals spend time with humans, and start to see what humans care about and why, they can start to participate in that consciousness, sometimes bringing things to the table just like another human would, sometimes even more. The "table", though, I think belongs to humans.

I believe we also underestimate the consciousness of plants. There are many plants around the world that appear to have the understanding of the whole universe within them.

But then the real question is the similarity and the differences between human thinking and cognition and that of animals. By all observation human cognition is sui generis.

I think animals particularly dogs understand our language better than we understand theirs, most of what we understand about dogs is behavior. I have seen dogs that you could tell a dog to go get the phone and they would do just that, and may have never done that before. If a dog told you or me to do that in dog speak we would be like what???

I think animals think and plan along the lines of instincts. When we have a hunch, we can't explain or reason why we have it, but we make decisions on it anyway. Human consciousness has more control over its instincts. It has more room to understand its instincts or reason with its instincts.
