For French speakers, the part about the chicken becoming a dentist has a deeper (accidental) meaning. The chicken becoming a dentist kind of implies that chickens would have teeth, and in French there's an idiom ''Quand les poules auront des dents...'' (When chickens will have teeth), which more accurately translates to ''When pigs fly'' (Used when talking about something that will never happen). So to me, when the chicken talks about becoming a dentist, it is even more literally talking about something inconceivable, that could seemingly never happen than what the song already implies.

The line "the road is gigantic the chicken is little" manages to make me tear up every time. There is something so relatable about a little chicken standing in the middle of a huge road and life feels like a big car is bearing down on you, and knowing there is nothing you can do to stop it because you're just a little chicken.

As much as I love this song, it's even cooler how seemingly everyone who's listened to it has taken a different meaning from it. Some see it as a metaphor for suicide, some see it as a metaphor for escaping an abusive relationship, and some just see it as a deconstruction of the classic joke. My personal take on its meaning is that it's meant to serve as a metaphor for transitioning from one part of your life to another. Needless to say, I listened to this song a LOT during the summer after I graduated.

I love how the double meaning of getting to the other side is still ambiguous. When I was younger I always interpreted it as an anti-joke and that the simple explanation was the chicken wanted to get to the other side not once considering the āother sideā part of the punchline. And along comes Bo saying that itās open to interpretation and that little boy who thought the chicken who just crossed an actual road this whole time without thinking anything of it couldāve been right this whole time in the most beautiful way possible

this song gives so much more meaning to the line in Goodbye: "You can pick the street. I'll meet you on the other side"
